After years of working and having already released four albums, the Finnish band The Rasmus achieved a notorious success twenty years ago with the hit In The Shadows, from their album Dead Letters. I remember that they played in an MTV event here in Spain and some people in high school brought the Cd in their bags, to probably listen to it with the old-fashioned portable Cd players during playground, like many of us used to do. Bands like Evanescence, Linkin Park or Simple Plan were very popular back then, and I always thought that The Rasmus were the perfect outsiders for that musical era, meaning that they made it without coming from the States.
Regarding the album, it's very well produced. I really like the creative decisions made with the echoes, distortions, reverbs and pannings, giving more depth and richness to the final result. The guitars and the voice of the singer are very present and powerful, which is probably one of the most remarkable aspects of the recording, but what I like most about the songs are the melodies. They're very rocker and catchy at the same time, which is something I always appreciate when it comes to rock bands. I love that balance between delicateness and strength, sweetness and anger, pop and rock... that's probably why I've never been a big fan of too hardcore heavy metal bands on one hand or bands that are too soft on the other. I'm just no good with extremes, I prefer a combination of both styles.
So, following the last statement, if you like rock bands that aren't extremely dark or heavy but still appreciate the sound of a good electric guitar, you're gonna love this album.
Favorite songs: In The Shadows, Still Standing, In My Life, Guilty, Not Like The Other Girls and Back In The Picture.
